Delays, Disappointments, Disagreements: What the Three Ds Are Teaching You

By Ch Adithya Swaroop

Not every delay is a door closing. Sometimes it is the road asking you to get ready.

When All Three Arrive Together

Some weeks bring all three at once. A plan gets delayed. A result falls short of what you hoped. A conversation turns into an argument.

It is easy to read them as signs that something is wrong with us, or that we are going backwards. We feel bad about them, and then we feel bad about feeling bad.

What we forget is that delays, disappointments and disagreements are not detours from the journey. They are part of it.

What feels like an obstacle is often the journey doing its work on you.

Two Clocks

Every journey runs on two clocks.

The first is the one we set. By thirty. By next quarter. By the end of this year.

The second is readiness. The skills, the people, and the inner steadiness we need to hold what we are asking for.

Some destinations we reach on the timeline we set. Others we reach only when we are fully prepared. Sometimes the two clocks match. Often they don’t. And when they don’t, we call it a delay.

Sometimes a delay is just the distance between when we wanted something and when we are ready to carry it.

Delays Teach Patience

Patience is not sitting still and hoping. It is staying committed while results take their time.

A delay asks one question: can you keep walking when the reward is not yet in sight? The waiting itself rarely changes. What changes is the meaning we give it. (I explored this in You Don’t Hate Red Lights. You Hate Not Being in Control.)

Patience is not waiting quietly. It is continuing steadily.

Disappointments Teach Preparation

A disappointment shows us the gap between what we expected and what we were prepared for.

That gap is not a verdict on who you are. It is information. NLP puts it simply: there is no failure, only feedback. (More on that in Feedback Is the Breakfast of Champions.)

So instead of asking “Why did this happen to me?”, ask “What was missing?” A skill. Some information. Better timing. The right support. Whatever it was, that is what you prepare next.

Disagreements Teach Alertness and Attention

In NLP we say the map is not the territory. Each of us responds to our own map of the world, built from our experiences, values and beliefs. A disagreement is two maps meeting.

Alertness is noticing what happens inside you in that moment. The tight chest. The rush to reply. The point where you stop understanding and start defending.

Attention is choosing where to place your focus. On what the other person is actually saying, not on what you expect them to say. Often a disagreement shows us a blind spot long before reality does.

A disagreement is two maps meeting. Each one can show the other what it left out.

Try This

Think of one delay, one disappointment and one disagreement from the past month. For each, ask:

  1. Delay: What is this extra time giving me the chance to prepare?
  2. Disappointment: What did this show me that I need next time?
  3. Disagreement: What does the other person see that I didn’t?

Write the answers down. You may find that each of the three Ds has been quietly handing you something useful.

Keep Walking

Delays, disappointments and disagreements are not the opposite of progress. They are how progress shapes us. Some destinations arrive on our schedule. Others arrive when we are ready. Either way, the road between is where we grow. (I wrote about that road in From Worst to Best, the Road Is Called Better.)

You don’t just reach the destination. You become the person who can stay there.

Which of the three Ds is visiting you right now? What might it be preparing you for? Share it in the comments, or just write it down for yourself.
